Glass Manipulators

Advanced handling and integration

The engineering solution for glass handling.

In modern glass processing, manipulators are the critical link between high-speed production and in-plant safety. Unlike ordinary lifting equipment, the manipulator integrates all the handling controls and the vertical lifting of the crane into a single ergonomic console, allowing a single operator to manage heavy, large-format glass with precision and reduced physical effort. Vertical lifting is available either in an electric version via a hoist or in a pneumatic version.

Whether unloading from an insulating-glass line or feeding a horizontal CNC, these systems are conceived to improve handling and operator safety.

Pneumatic Glass Manipulators

High-Cycle Efficiency

For environments requiring rapid movement and 100% air-powered operation, the pneumatic series offers a robust solution for glass manipulation. These units utilize a high-precision pneumatic cylinder for lifting, providing a more stable and “rigid” feel than cable-based systems.

Pneumatic Glass Manipulators with Electric Lifting (Hoist)

High-Cycle Efficiency

For environments that require rapid movements and fully pneumatic operation, the pneumatic series offers a robust solution for glass handling. These units use a high-precision pneumatic cylinder for lifting, providing a greater sense of stability and “rigidity” compared with cable-based systems

Key Technical Advantages

Intuitive Command Integration

The ergonomic console centralizes all functions—lifting, tilting, and vacuum activation. This streamlined interface reduces cycle times and simplifies training for production personnel.

Precision Rotating
& Tilting

Powered 90º rotation and tilting provide fluid, motorized control. Operators manage complex movements directly from the console, eliminating physical strain and ensuring precise load orientation.

Structural Rigidity
& Stability

Utilizing a rigid cylinder or stabilized arm eliminates the "pendulum effect" common in cable hoists. This ensures the glass remains perfectly steady during high-speed factory maneuvering.

Dual-Stage Vacuum Safety Logic

Integrated safety interlocks and dual-button release systems prevent accidental vacuum loss. The load remains secured until fully supported, protecting both the operator and the material.

The MANI series represents a specialized evolution in glass handling, designed specifically for integration with insulating glass lines and straight edging machines. Unlike basic lifters, these manipulators feature a centralized operating console that can integrate crane hoist commands (Up/Down). This consolidation of controls allows a single operator to manage both the vacuum engagement and the vertical displacement, significantly increasing throughput while reducing ergonomic strain.

Safety in the Schiavo philosophy is proactive. The MANI series (notably models like the MANI4EBP and MANI4GEBE) is equipped with a sophisticated safety protocol that prevents the accidental release of the load. The system forbids the unloading of the glass sheet unless the (MANI2E) sensors detect that the load is securely leaning on a stable surface. This eliminates the risk of human error during high-cadence production cycles.

  • Operating Range: Standard pads function reliably between -10°C and 40°C (32-104°F).

The choice depends on the required precision and available utilities:

  • Pneumatic (e.g., MANI-2BP, MANI-4BP): Utilizes compressed air (6/7 bar) for 90° tilting. Ideal for rapid, repetitive movements where air lines are readily available.

  • Electric/Motorized (e.g., MANI-4BE, MANI-6E): Features motorized 90° tilting or 360° rotation via gearmotors and inverters. This provides smoother, more controlled movement for heavier loads (up to 540 kg) and is essential when compressed air is not the primary power source.

Reliability in high-cadence glass handling is a product of rigorous preventative maintenance. Schiavo aligns its recommendations with international safety standards to ensure the integrity of the lifting cycle:

  • Daily/Shift-Start Inspections: Operators must perform visual checks on suction pads, vacuum pipelines, and vacuum gauges before every shift to identify immediate wear or funtionality.

  • Frequent Operational Checks: Every 20 to 40 hours of operation, a more detailed verification of the warning systems (acoustic/luminous) and pad seals is required.

  • Periodic Certified Inspections: Comprehensive technical audits should be conducted every year. These are essential for evaluating the internal vacuum pump efficiency and structural components.

Yes. The series is modular. For example, while the MANI-2BP is optimized for loads up to 250 kg with 2 cups, the MANI-6E handles up to 540 kg with 6 cups. Many models offer telescopic arms as an option, allowing the configuration to be adjusted for varying glass geometries, with a typical working range from 1200x800 mm up to 3300x2600 mm.

Schiavo maintains a strategic inventory of standard components to support rapid deployment.

  • In-Stock Units: Available for immediate dispatch following final testing.

  • Bespoke Construction: If a unit must be engineered to specific requirements, the standard lead time is approximately 4 working weeks. This timeframe ensures that every machine undergoes our mandatory "Italian Technology" quality control protocol before leaving our facility.
